NOW CLOSED win a beautiful dress for my birthday

You can find the giveaway winner at the bottom of this post

So it’s my 27th birthday today. Philosophical, angsty post to follow in a couple days, of course. But first, I thought it would be fun to do a giveaway for the occasion. You know, because giving gifts is just as good as getting them, and I really appreciate you guys reading this blog and participating in the little ETDC community. Thank you!!

I’m giving away a $100 gift card for Shabby Apple, because they have some seriously, seriously beautiful stuff and when I’m being fully girly, I admit to myself that winning a pretty dress/amazing earrings would just about always make my day, no matter what.

(black lace party dress…so delightfully fancy)

Here’s the deal: like the Shabby Apple FB page and then leave a comment under this post to enter the contest. (If you don’t use Facebook but want to enter, let me know and I’ll talk to Shabby Apple and see if there’s a way to get around this.) In your comment, let me know what item you have your eye on, if any, or you can just tell me why you want to win or why you like Shabby Apple’s stuff. But don’t feel any pressure to make your reasons amazing- I’ll pick the winner randomly.

Even if you don’t win, all Eat the Damn Cake readers can use the following code to get a 10% discount off of any Shabby Apple product for a month, until April 6th: eatthedamncake10off

Yay!

The sad, dark underbelly of all this: I’m noticing that there isn’t a huge size range on the site. If you can’t find your size, please accept my apologies– I wish all of the awesome clothing sites were inclusive– and consider checking out the accessories or bags or shoes or anything else.

(extremely pretty pearl hoop earrings)

Also: Only people with US mailing addresses can receive stuff from Shabby Apple. But if you want to enter anyway and are planning a trip to NYC anytime soon, you can always have the prize forwarded to me and I promise I’ll only try it on once or twice while saving it for you :-) OR: as Caitlin just suggested in the comments, you can paypal me some shipping money and I can get the gift to you. I know it’s an extra step, but if you think it’s worth it, we can definitely make it happen.

I’ll run the giveaway for a week, until Weds the 13th. Which is the day after my anatomy scan ultrasound, when I find out the baby’s gender and holy shit, that feels like such a big deal right now I’m a nervous wreck/thrilled out of my mind/I forgot about my birthday completely because I was thinking about the 12th so much. Anyway. I can’t even believe that this is happening. But not the point. Win a dress! Or shoes!

(strappy flowery heel with buckle. If I could wear a heel this high and not kill myself, I would go with this.)

Good luck!!

*  *  *

Unroast: Today I love the way I look in a tanktop with that slight padding. I never want to wear a bra again.

P.S. Thanks to Shabby Apple for doing this for my birthday! This was really fun to set up.

Happy yummy Birthday to you from Germany!

Sooo I don’t have anything from Shabby Apple, but I love the looks of their stuff! I would really like to buy a dress. I don’t know which one, but I never wear dresses anymore and I would like to buy a new one :) And maybe some snazzy dangly earrings.

    Happy Birthday, Kate!

Well… I wanted to join this giveaway because… I don’t actually own a dress, due to a weird combination of low funds + difficulty finding the right one. For a while I’ve been thinking I kinda need one, even though I don’t know why. And this dress ticks all my boxes: it’s not too short, it doesn’t show cleavage, etc. So yay!

All that said, I live in the UK (boo), though I would happily pay for delivery.

Once again, happy birthday and good luck on the ultrasound scan!

Happy Birthday! Eat lots of yummy cake!

I left a like on the Shabby Apple FB page.

I would love to win a dress from them, because they are just so girly. And I’m finally at the age where I miss being girly and the “grown-up-ness” of life imposes on me.

I have a three year old and a one year old. I see little girls wearing all the fun tutus out and about and I ask myself, “Where’s the tutus for adults?” :)

i live in nursing tanks and cardigans these days.

and whoooo! for the scan. we waited to find out, but seeing baby’s face and spine and hands and wiggling was still awesomely exciting.

Hello & Happy Birthday! Thank you for setting up the Shabby Apple giveaway. I love the Shabby Apple and like them on FB. I’ve been reading your blog for ages…I love it! And I want to enter the contest because I just (emphasis on “just”) found out that I am pregnant too!!! I have really, really appreciated the posts you have done about your pregnancy. Thank you. And I have my eye on the Aphrodite Maternity Dress in a Small…because I want to feel pretty and also celebrate my soon to be belly. It would be my first piece of maternity wear! Yikes!

Best wishes and lots of birthday love! SP

Happy birthday! I hope the ultrasound goes well.

I love Shabby Apple. Although their sizes *are* pretty restrictive and I think my curves would only fit into certain styles (some of their dresses seem geared for smaller-chested women. Which is fine… just doesn’t work well for me). They have such lovely taste, though – I love all of the vintage styles.

  25. Kayla H responded on 06 Mar 2013 at 1:02 pm #

I love almost every single thing on their website and have shop-stocked them for years now. But they’re a little out of my price range, so I just wait for them or the bloggers I follow to run contests… :-)

today though, I am especially hoping for a purple dress, or possibly one from the Alice in Wonderland-esque collection!

Are you going to share the baby’s gender with your followers or will that be kept secret until the little one arrives??

  26. J responded on 06 Mar 2013 at 1:11 pm #

I just checked out the website and love the vintage style clothes and accessories! Thanks for introducing me to Shabby Apple :)

  27. Kari responded on 06 Mar 2013 at 1:12 pm #

Happy birthday, Kate! I’m 27, it’s not so bad. Actually this was one of the few recent birthdays where I didn’t feel like it was a thing to notice at all. 26, 27, same thing, right?

I’ve been reading your blog since the very first post, I think, back when it was a shared venture, so I kind of feel like we’re friends. That’s normal, right? I’m getting married this summer and we’re thinking of having kids sooner than later so I’m loving this new era in your blog. Good luck on the ultrasound!

I liked Shabby Apple on Facebook, I would love to add a new dress to my wardrobe since I am a poor medical student who can’t afford anything ever, and also I have so many weddings coming down the pike.

    Happy Birthday, Kate!

If I truly bought into the astrology thing I’d say, “But of course you’re a Pisces! Some of the wisest, most-grounded women I know are Pisces.”

Ok, so I’m a little too pragmatic to buy into the wisdom of the cosmos, and I don’t really know you, for that matter. STILL, I think you are incredibly wise and grounded. :)

Enjoy some cake (I really hope you feel well enough to eat cake!).

Ummm… holy crap, thanks for that. Love. These. Dresses.

I liked Shabby Apple with a quickness on Facebook, and signed up for their newsletter. I want too many of the models to narrow it down to just one yet – but for starters: I would be adorable in the Knave of Hearts, the V.P. is just my style, the Mulholland wants to go out to dinner with my hubby and me, I wish I would look great in the Elizabeth Island, and I’d love to wear the Brampton any day of the week.

    Happy birthday!

  39. Jen Fisher responded on 06 Mar 2013 at 1:48 pm #

I love Shabby Apple! I’ve had my eye on several pieces for quite a while now.

27 was great for me–that was the age I was when I got married. I just turned 30 on the 24th, and it wasn’t what I expected. I thought that I wouldn’t be as affected by it, but the week leading up to the day was pretty rough. Enjoy this time–you’re still in your twenties, you’re pregnant with your first baby, and you have a husband who adores you. Happy happy birthday, Kate!

  40. Abby responded on 06 Mar 2013 at 2:25 pm #

    Happy Birthday Ms. Kate!!!

Consider the page liked and myself entered–chances are I wouldn’t fit into their clothing, but as you mentioned, there is lovely jewelry in addition to shoes and bags, so it’s worth a try!

  41. Nicole Power responded on 06 Mar 2013 at 2:26 pm #

I feel weird because this was like the first dress listed, but I’m a sucker for lace, so I really love this one:

Lovely Kate, happy birthday!! I look forward to the angsty post– but for now just have a ridiculously good time, okay? Actually have a ridiculously good time all the time. Getting existential does not have to be incompatible with smiling, right? ;) For some reason that made me think of Monty Python.

Anyways. Liked Shabby Apple on Facebook! Fingers crossed!

Happy Birthday!! Why do I want to win a hundred bucks to an awesome dress store? Because after having six kids in the last six years I REALLY need to wear something non-maternity!!! Of course if it looks really good, it may just get me pregnant with number 7… ;)

    http://www.shabbyapple.com/p-1278-dressage.aspx

i liked this dress because it was (on sale which is where I always look first and also because) the sleeves are long which is SO hard to find on a dress and i’m tired of wearing cardigans over all of my dresses. but then i saw that it was called “Dressage” and now I feel the need to find a new favorite. THanks for the giveaway, happy early birthday and good luck with the ultrasound!

You’re 27?? Wow. You’re so amazing, I thought you must be old. If that makes sense. All awesome women are older. Evidence: Meryl Streep.

I love that Calliope Skirt. It has a certain madness I love and am deeply attracted to. I think my mum and I would have fights over it. But that’s okay – a communal wardrobe is useful at times like that.

Also – never commented, but I absolutely love your work. You say a lot of the things I don’t realise I think, or do but don’t like to admit to myself. It’s nice to share – or at least, know that there are people at least as crazy as me out there. Happy birthday :)

  71. emily responded on 06 Mar 2013 at 10:37 pm #

I like them on FB — and would love to win one of their dresses; it is SO hard to find dresses with sleeves that are also knee length. It seems that if a dress has sleeves, it (too often) hits mid-thigh. :/

But Shabby Apple makes the most beautiful dresses! I’ll have to keep my fingers crossed!

The more usual terminology is you’ll find out the baby’s sex. Sex = biological; gender = identity, presentation, perception of self by self and others.

I’m sure you’re trying to be helpful, but a comment like this sounds really condescending without some sort of disclaimer. And it’s hard to write all the time in public without getting something a little politically incorrect sometimes. So some slack being cut in my direction would definitely be appreciated.

Annnd….this reaction is probably what’s going to happen whenever someone says something that annoys me about how I talk about my baby. MAMA BEAR!

This poor grad student would love some pretty new clothes! (Or, if the sizes don’t fit me maybe one of my bridesmaids could wear something from here!)
Either way our birthdays are about a week apart! Happy Birthday!

haha!! I was thinking of actually starting with that line “I’m soooo olllld now…”
Nah– I’m in my twenties! It’s just that birthdays do that thing where they make you think about the past year and your whole life and your whole future and time and existence and god and the universe. you know. the usual.

    :p

That’s amazing that you’ve seen this from the beginning. Also, I sort of want to apologize to you for how silly I’ve sometimes sounded. But since you stuck around, maybe it’s OK? Anyway, THANK YOU! And so exciting about the summer!! Congratulations!!

Also, I should get off this thread and let people enter the giveaway. I just keep wanting to comment back. Oy. But someone said something about how people in other countries can always paypal some shipping money to me if they win the giveaway, and I’m totally on board with that, just so you guys know. Wait– I’ll put that in the post. Hang on

Super exciting news about the ultrasound! I can’t wait to hear which you’re having. Seriously, you are going to be such a wonderful mother. Being philosophical and angsty is what’s going to make you awesome. Hang in there! And yeah, I don’t wear a bra when I’m pregnant whenever I can get away with it.

    Happy Birthday Kate!!!!!!!

I remember my (32nd) birthday when I was pregnant with my first child. It was sooooo strange to be celebrating the day of my own birth while awaiting the birth of this new being. Talk about exciting.

And what great energy to give away a gift on your special day! I would love to have a new dress from that super hip place, Shabby Apple, to wear to my brother in law’s wedding in the Bahamas next month!

Also, 27 is my lucky number.
    You rock!

I love Shabby Apple’s clothing, but they don’t release anything above a 16 anymore, which makes me batty because the Ferris Wheel collection is SO FLIPPING CUTE. They still have a few pieces in WS for me, though, so I’d go with either the Boss or the CEO–same dress, black or red. As for the rest of the whimsical, colorful things I love and can’t have, I guess I’ll just have to sew myself some knockoffs. Sno-cone blouse, you will be mine!

Have an absolutely wonderful birthday Kate! I love reading your articles and first discovered your blog through The Frisky. I always look forward to your posts!

I love the retro-style that most of Shabby Apple’s collections have. I’m an avid swing dancer, and when I can get the time off from being a responsible adult, I travel the east coast Lindy Hopping. I’m having the time of my life dancing, and Shabby Apple’s dresses fit right in with the swing era. I’ve had my eye on the Arripidae dress for quite a while, but am really digging their new Ferris Wheel collection as well!

Happy birthday Kate! I haven’t had a chance to peruse the Shabby Apple site but I’m almost positive I could find some cute shoes (a girl can never have to many, I’ve heard) to enjoy.
Also, I just want to say, I’m pretty much addicted to your blog. I just happened to stumble across it about a week ago and now all I seem to do in my spare time is read your posts. Every time I read one, I also add all of the links within it to my reading list, so I never know the dates of the things I’m reading. You are an amazing writer; very relatable. Anyway, I look forward to (hopefully) getting all the old posts read so I can start reading the new ones. Oh, and congrats on the baby! Take care.

Kate – sorry! In my defence, I typed that after a somewhat grumpiness-inducing day, and was low on energy but wanted to say something anyway, so typed the shortest possible message. Which I think was a poor judgement call on my part.

I wasn’t meaning to be rude, but had assumed it was just something that you hadn’t come across, which in hindsight was a bit daft as I do get that you’re usually really on it with this kind of thing. (Like I said, was tired.) Sorry for coming across as it did though. :(

The West Coaster and Estate are both adorably vintagy(yep, I’ve decided that’s a word), and I love the color of the Headliner. The Bijou would make a really nice casual weekend afternoon dress. You have the same birthday as my mom! No wonder I like your writing so much. Happy Birthday! I have recently decided that I am not really a dress person. This frees up more of my fabric stash to become quilts instead of lovely dresses that will sit in my closet unused. However, Shabby Apple has a lovely swimsuit collection, and I could easily justify adding any of their jewelry to my collection. Thank you so much, and best wishes on your pregnancy.

Okay, Okay. You’ve made me come out of lurkdom for this one. Little did I know that I’d discover a new little treasure when I visited Shabby Apples website. I spent far too much time there, adding things to my Amazon wish list. But, I maintain, that I was doing it for you in celebration of your having traversed around the sun another year.
I’m willing to admit that I’m in need of some more feminine touches. Much of my growing up years I was wearing hand-me-downs from my big brother. And when I did get new clothing, we always purchased it just a bit too big – because, you know, I’d grow into it, right? And I want to have this thing for years to come, of course. But I never did grow into them. I never did fill out all those baggy clothes. Yet, I’ve still got a representative sample of them in my closet. Slowly, slowly, now that I’m 29, I’m replacing them with clothing that fits, that bespeaks my style (as I figure out what that is).
Methinks I’ve starting to feel guilty about spending too much time on Eat the Damn Cake and not enough time writing new sections of my thesis. Ok, let’s get productive, folks. Here I go.

Happiest of Happier Happy Birthdays, Kate! :]

I love reading your blog so much. It helps me through my “icky” days and those just kinda blaaah ones too.

I do not have a FaceBook, so I am entering the contest right here!!

I absolutely ADORE that black dress from Shabby Apple (above, in the blog)!! Ahhhh!!!
I grew up declining “girly” things all my life, and proceeded to hang out with “the guys” and never with the girls (since they were kinda catty for a while..). Then, at some point, when girls became nicer, and I realized the girly items didn’t all have to be sparkly pink, I grew in to loving more lace, and more silk, and adorableness. :]
I love pieces with detail and subtle lace. Especially dresses!!
Dresses can make a girl feel so beautiful, because each girl truly is (in or out of that dress). :]
