beautiful sandals giveaway (because it’s spring!!) and a quick babymoon update

I’m doing another giveaway! This one is in honor of the weather turning warm, which I know it will soon, because it has to.

I’m in Hawaii with Bear, on a “babymoon.” A little corny, I know. Planning this trip, I realized that Bear and I have only ever taken one other vacation together that was completely a vacation– not like, a few days somewhere we had to be anyway for his work or to visit relatives. So this is a big deal for us. It is also a big deal for me to be a functioning person again, after three months of severe morning sickness. I feel like I’ve been set free!

At the same time, it feels surreal, being here. Like I’ve stepped into one of those desktop background photos that come with the computer.

I am having trouble processing it, and my mind keeps going, “We should be doing something productive!” and then I remember that actually we can just sit on the beach some more. What a weird thing. And then, when I’m just sitting on the beach for a while, my mind slides into a kind of blank peacefulness, and I can’t quite recall why anyone lives in New York City, so far away from green mountains with waterfalls cutting misty white trails down their flanks. Actually, it seems sort of mysterious why anyone lives anywhere with a winter.

We went hiking at dawn, just because we were feeling awesome. Up this twisting, steep trail made out of slippery rocks that the ancient Hawaiians used because they were apparently fearless and in amazing shape. I am pretty sure my baby is convinced I am the kind of woman who does this kind of thing. On the way up, I narrated for her, in case she was wondering.

“Braving the deadly, jagged face of the most dangerous cliff in the world, your mother continues her record-shattering wilderness trek. It is shaping up to be another epic adventure in a series of death-defying feats of unmatched courage. Your mother, referred to as ‘a superwoman among women’– the New York Times, 2012– and sometimes simply, ‘The coolest person ever,’ has undertaken yet another mission that might just redefine human ability. And your father is pretty cool, too.”

“You guys are crazy!” said a serious-looking hiker with special grip boots and those pole things with the points on the end, “You’re wearing sandals?!” She easily passed us.

And when we headed back down, drenched in mud and clinging to nearby trees to prevent ourselves from skidding to a messy, painful death, our optimistic spontaneity was beginning to seem more concerning than anything.

“Happy Easter!” several other hikers piped, politely averting their eyes from the muddy carnage of our legs, my obviously pregnant belly, and my bare feet (I finally just gave up and took my treadless sandals off), and pausing to gently inquire if we were alright as we slipped and yelped and only barely avoided colliding with yet another boulder.

“You too!” we called, a little late, awkward. (I always get the urge to say, “No, no, none for me, but you go ahead and celebrate!”)

“Baby,” I admitted grudgingly, “the truth is– your mother is kind of a neurotic, city-dwelling Jew. I’m sorry if that comes as a disappointment. But I am very good at certain things. I make excellent grilled cheeses, for example. I–”

“Honey– watch the trail!” called Bear. “Our daughter is inside you!”

The baby kicked my bladder in agreement. No doubt she was hoping that I would quit all this running around and recline somewhere instead. That seems to be her favorite position, and I tend to oblige her. I am very good at reclining. And it’s still Passover, after all. There’s something about that in the seder. So, yeah.

Anyway, giveaway! Taos footwear sent me a pair of sandals that I brought with me to wear on the beach, and luckily refrained from destroying on that very treacherous, very brash hike, although there’s a real chance they would’ve performed better than the shoes I wore. They’re really lovely and comfortable and they make me want to wear flowy white skirts with them and stay in Hawaii forever, because they belong here. I wanted to give you guys the option to win a similar pair. They can either look like this:

Or like this:

(they’re called wishbone– here’s the page)

Mine are red, but I love both.

To enter, as usual, “like” Taos on FB (here), and leave me a comment under this post to let me know you’re in. It doesn’t have to say anything more than “I’m in!”

Technically, you need to be in the U.S. to enter, but if you’re not and you win, I promise we will work something out. I can always have them sent to me and then ship them to you and we can split the cost or something. I’m flexible, because I don’t want to exclude people.

I’ll leave the giveaway open for a week, so it will officially end on Monday the 8th.

Good luck!! Thanks to Taos for this! The sandals are seriously awesome.

Unroast: Today I love how little I’m thinking about wearing a bikini on this trip, as I go right ahead and wear one. I have in the past thought about it kind of a lot. Oy.

Me in a bikini, showing off the fact that my breasts have, disappointingly, not gotten noticeably larger because of pregnancy, a disturbingly enormous bug bite on my upper thigh, and my super cool, sexy babymoon attitude:

yay! i’m glad you’re having a good time.

pregnancy was the only time i’ve ever worn a bikini. it felt wonderful to do it and not to care what i looked like because i was an AWESOME FERTILE GODDESS OF AWESOMENESS. yes.

and my boobs only went from B cup to C cup. i know lots of women say theirs exploded, but mine didn’t really.

I’ve been to Hawaii once, and I have two pieces of advice: DO NOT forget the sunscreen–I managed to forget it the day before our return flight, and got a MAJOR sunburn on my shoulders, arms and face. Turns out, I had the bottle in my bag the whole time we were at Volcano National Park (and got to walk on rocks that were less than a year old–how awesome is that!)
The park was worth the visit, BTW.
I am SO glad you are feeling better!

  3. Mandy responded on 01 Apr 2013 at 9:23 am #

Sorry, the second peice of advice is to visit the Volcano National Park. And, if you like macadamia nuts, the Mauna Loa plant/farm is also worth a look.

  4. Jess responded on 01 Apr 2013 at 10:33 am #

You look so gorgeous!!! That is all. I don’t have any other major advice, but I have been to Hawai’i twice! It all depends what island you’re on, and I don’t know which!

You look great! Like the attitude!
Enjoy your trip & thanks for the giveaway.

What’s a vacation without one or two brash hikes in inappropriate footwear (or none at all)?

    Thanks for the giveaway!

I always end up on hikes, totally unprepared- wearing the wrong shoes, carrying a purse that sort of thing. My husband started wearing Choco’s a couple of years ago and will brave anything in them. I’m usually sliding around in my birkies- I love the Taos brand and have two pairs, but cannot abide anything between my toes, so I’m not in for this contest.
Love your bikini pic- enjoy the relaxation- recline as much as you can. So great that you are feeling awesome now.

We’re on Kauai. We saw Waimea Canyon the other day and it is mind-blowing. Wow. Sometimes I can’t get over how big the world is. Has anyone else been to Kauai?

    @Mandy
We’re already both sunburnt. OY. Sigh….

  9. Kate responded on 01 Apr 2013 at 12:47 pm #

    @Janet T
Yup– Bear was in Birkenstocks, the only warm-weather shoes he owns (except sneakers, but he was wearing sandals in solidarity with me because I actually forgot to bring sneakers and apparently he didn’t want me to feel alone?)

I never know brands, and no one is paying me to say this, but I was surprised at how nice and well-made my Taos sandals are. Most of my shoes are sort of flimsy and they are all from DSW, always.

Ok, the boob thing – mine were relatively normal during my pregnancy, but the day after my son was born? BOOM!! Gigantic boobs. Huge. Totally ready to feed that baby. (Though I didn’t breastfeed.)
    So, there’s that possibility.

I LOVE KAUAI’I. I’ve been to 4 different islands and its hands down my favorite. Waimea was literally the best thing I did there, and did it twice. Get a Red Dirt onesie for your little girl! They dye it with the mud.

Also, dont know how far you are from it, but I have a specific Hawaiian shave ice stand to recommend. Shave ice is a very specific dessert, its not like a snow cone, and they serve it over vanilla ice cream so it melts into it. The place I like also lets you add adzuki beans under it, so its like a sweet asian bean paste treat as well! Hopefully you can splurge on the glucose and taste it just once (really, any stand will have something great ;P)

Rocking the bikini! Yes! This post makes me sad that I didn’t plan a babymoon (as silly as that word is). I felt like we didn’t “need” a vacation since we took 2 weeks to wander through Turkey at the end of September (where I got pregnant!) but now I’m really wishing I could sit on a warm beach somewhere and put my belly on display.
Hawaii sounds lovely, especially the slippery hike getting you out of your normal element. :)
